PRODUCT FAQ

  1. What is 3M™ Microfinishing Film Roll 372L used for?

The 3M™ Microfinishing Film Roll 372L is designed to provide precision finishing for a variety of surfaces, including metals, plastics, and hard coatings. It's commonly used in automotive and aerospace industries.

  2. What does the "40 Mic" specification mean?

"40 Mic" refers to the thickness of the abrasive particles on the film roll. In this case, they are 40 microns thick.

  3. Can you clarify what PCOR, ASO, ERMB mean?

Of course! These are actually product features

  4. - PCOR stands for Polyester Carrier (backing) with Optically Clear Adhesive,

    - ASO is Anti-Stick Open (coating) which helps prevent loading or clogging,

  5. - ERMB means Enhanced Ruined Mylar Backing – it provides greater durability compared to traditional polyester films.

Predictable, Consistent, Repeatable Performance

3M™ Microfinishing Film Roll 372L achieves an extremely consistent scratch for microfinishing by using micron-graded mineral, measured at tight size tolerances. The resin bond ensures reliable, consistent performance. The abrasive has a durable film backing that helps achieve tight geometry and finish tolerances. This microfinishing roll comes in a broad range of micron grades to achieve reproducible surface characteristics and geometric values that adhere to specification.

3M designed Type 2 film in a range of colors to reduce the risk of operator error. The color coding is a useful visual cue, as is sorting width by core size and side and end of roll printing and marking. In some applications, numerous grades are run simultaneously to achieve finishes that differ across the surface of a single complex part.

Film Backing Provides Uniformly Flat Vehicle for Finer Finish

Film backings provide a superior, uniformly flat surface to hold abrasive particles. Abrasive grains don't compress or become pressed into the backing. The polyester film backing is highly conformable and tear-resistant, flexing to help achieve a consistent finish over contours. It is stronger than comparable paper products, making it ideal for high-production environments.

For Flawless Geometries

Manufacturers of critical automotive components have little room for error in producing parts to specification. Microfinishing removes variations in the surface, minimizes friction, and manipulates metal behavior in other ways. Engine component surfaces and geometry can be improved by using microfinishing, which is essential for finishes of crankshafts and camshafts that rotate on increasingly thinner films of oil.

Recommended Applications

3M™ Microfinishing Films are used in the production of industrial components such as custom flanges and fittings for the oil and gas industry, as well as superfinishing of automotive parts, like crankshafts, camshafts, and transmission parts.
