The Benefits of Silicon Carbide

When it comes to creating a durable and long-lasting abrasive, the mineral used is of utmost importance. 3M has chosen silicon carbide for the 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 734. Silicon carbide is a very hard mineral that fractures easily, resulting in freshly exposed sharp edges that cut extra fast and produce a smooth, professional-looking finish. Silicon carbide sandpaper products are commonly used for low-pressure applications such as paint prep and finishing on wood and metal. Although it wears faster than aluminum oxide, it produces a superior finish. This product also offers a lightweight paper backing that delivers good flexibility, so users don't have to worry about gouging or denting the workpiece. Closed coat construction means silicon carbide mineral covers 100% of the paper backing. Given the dense concentration of mineral, these paper rolls leave a fine scratch pattern.

The Wetordry™ Advantage

The 3M™ Wetordry™ products are backed with a waterproof paper backing that supports both wet and dry applications. Paper backing is preferable for lighter applications such as finishing and paint prep because it is lighter weight and smoother than cloth. However, many such applications produce a significant amount of dust, clogging the abrasive points and creating an inferior work environment. These effects can be minimized by sanding with water or coolant to rinse dust away from the workpiece and the abrasive surface. In short – 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 734 is like having wet and dry sandpaper in a single product.

These versatile paper rolls are ideal for off-hand and portable machine sanding, lacquer surfaces, metallurgical specimens, materials with laminated and/or coated surfaces, fillers, metal, plastics, acrylics, and other solid surface materials. They are also perfect for use in the marine industry for sanding old finishes, fine feather edging, and surface work.
