PRODUCT FAQ

  1. What makes 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F unique compared to other sanding belts?

The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F incorporates a blend of ceramic alumina and zirconia alumina abrasive grains for an exceptional cut rate and durability. It also features a flexible backing that conforms well to contours and provides consistent performance throughout the life of the belt.

  2. Can these belts be used on metal as well as wood?

Yes, they can. The 120 YF-weight formulation is ideal for medium to heavy-duty grinding, blending, and finishing applications on aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass/bronze alloys, hardwoods, softwoods or composites.

  3. How long do these belts typically last?

The lifespan of each belt varies depending on several factors such as the application type and pressure applied during use but this particular product has excellent longevity thanks in part to its durable cloth backing.

  4. Are there any special precautions I need to take when using this product?

Runs Cool on Heat-Sensitive Metals

3M™ Cloth Belt 577F is a versatile abrasive belt that is ideal for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings made of aluminum, mild steel, and stainless steel or other exotic metal alloys. This belt is designed to reduce running temperatures and protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The grinding aid incorporated in the belt helps to reduce heat buildup, while the abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. The alumina zirconia abrasive fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut-rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding.

Sized to Suit Your Needs

Abrasive belts come in many different widths and lengths and are used on a variety of different belt sanding tools for many different metalworking applications. 3M offers a broad selection of belts to fit most any industrial belt sander. Wider belts are used with wide belt sanders and feed-through style flat finishers to smooth rough-cut edges of metal sheets or add a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are generally used on a backstand for weld removal or for imparting a finish. Narrow belts can be used on file tools to access right angle corners for finishing.
