3M PTFE Film Tape 5491 uses an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive silicone adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in the movement of materials in many types of lay-flat applications.

  • Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
  • Silicone adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces
  • Wide temperature range for performance on heated machinery and equipment
  • Thicker version of 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5490, providing more durability and longer wear
  • Extruded 3M™ PTFE Film Tape lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes
  • Excellent chemical resistance enables tape to withstand challenging applications

Reduce Friction Between Moving Surfaces

This extruded film backing is designed to resist curling when unwound from the roll and lies flatter than skived PTFE film tapes, resulting in a more uniform non-skid surface. 3M developed this tape as a quick and convenient solution to reduce friction between moving surfaces. It serves as an anti-stick or easy-release medium, particularly in situations where pressure, temperature changes, and other factors may cause adhesion. By applying 3M PTFE Film Tape 5491, you can enhance surface movement, eliminate squeaks and rattles, and reduce machine noise. Additionally, PTFE is highly resistant to chemicals, making it suitable for temporary chemical barriers. With a wide temperature use range of -65F/-54C to 500F/260C, this tape is a versatile choice for various applications.

Recommended Applications
  • Roll-wrap for web processing, belts, and plates where sticky materials and inks may occur
  • High temperature wire bundling and harnessing
  • Squeak and noise reduction
  • Lining of chutes, troughs, and ducts
  • Shielding and protecting against chemicals
  • Mold release for composite bonding

What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material widely used in various industries and applications to reduce the coefficient of friction. Its non-stick properties and high heat resistance make it an ideal choice for non-stick coatings in frying pans and other cookware. PTFE is also an excellent insulating material for electrical applications due to its non-conductivity. Its chemical resistance, thanks to the fluoropolymer bonds, makes it non-reactive to numerous chemicals, making it effective for containers and pipework handling reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE significantly reduces friction, wear, and improves energy efficiency in machinery. Its low friction characteristics make it suitable for industrial applications that require sliding action of parts, such as bearings, gears, and slide plates. In these applications, PTFE outperforms nylon or acetal. 3M has utilized an extrusion process to create a thin film from this versatile compound and combined it with their unique pressure-sensitive adhesives to produce these PTFE tapes. The result is innovative, high-performance 3M PTFE tapes that are reliable, durable, and effectively reduce friction.
