3M PTFE Film Tape 5490 uses an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive silicone adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in the movement of materials in many types of lay-flat applications.
- Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
- Silicone adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces
- Wide temperature range for performance on heated machinery and equipment
- Extruded 3M™ PTFE Film Tape lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes
- Excellent chemical resistance enables tape to withstand challenging applications
- High strength and abrasion resistance ensures reliability and performance to reduce friction, rattle and machinery noise

PRODUCT FAQ
-
That sounds great! I would be happy to help. Here are the questions and answers
What are some typical applications for 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5490?
-
The 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5490 is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and packaging due to its high temperature resistance, chemical inertness, and non-stick properties.
Can this tape be easily cut or customized to fit specific shapes?
-
Yes, the 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5490 can be easily cut with scissors or a knife to accommodate specific shapes or sizes needed for different applications.
Is the adhesive on this tape strong enough to securely bond materials together?
-
Absolutely! The silicone adhesive on the back of the tape provides strong adhesion to various surfaces while maintaining excellent release properties.
How many rolls come in a case of 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5490?
-
Each case contains seven rolls of brown-colored 1-inch wide by 108-yard long tapes with a thickness of approximately 3.7 mil.
The 3M PTFE Film Tape 5490 is designed to reduce friction between moving surfaces. Unlike skived PTFE film tapes, this tape features an extruded film backing that resists curling and lies flatter, creating a more uniform non-skid surface. It serves as an anti-stick or easy-release medium, providing a solution for situations where pressure, temperature changes, and other factors may cause adhesion. By applying the 3M PTFE Film Tape 5490, you can improve surface movement, eliminate squeaks and rattles, and reduce machine noise. Additionally, PTFE is chemical resistant and can be used as a temporary chemical barrier. With a wide temperature use range from -65F/-54C to 500F/260C, this tape is suitable for various applications.
Recommended Applications- Roll-wrap for web processing, belts, and plates where sticky materials and inks may occur
- High temperature wire bundling and harnessing
- Squeak and noise reduction
- Lining of chutes, troughs, and ducts
- Shielding and protecting against chemicals
- Mold release for composite bonding
What is PTFE?
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material widely used in various industries and applications to reduce friction. Its non-stick properties and high heat resistance make it an ideal non-stick coating for frying pans and other cookware. PTFE is also an excellent insulating material for electrical applications due to its non-conductivity. It is non-reactive to numerous chemicals, making it effective for containers and pipework handling reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE significantly reduces friction, wear, and improves energy efficiency in machinery. Its low friction properties make it suitable for industrial applications that require sliding action, such as bearings, gears, and slide plates. In these applications, PTFE outperforms materials like nylon or acetal. 3M has utilized an extrusion process to create a thin film from this versatile compound and paired it with their unique pressure-sensitive adhesives to produce these reliable and durable PTFE tapes. The innovative 3M PTFE tapes effectively reduce friction and provide high performance.
