3M PTFE Skived Film Tape 5480 uses a skived, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), conformable film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive silicone adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in the movement of web materials in many types of roll-wrap applications.

  • Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
  • Silicone adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces
  • Wide temperature range for performance on heated machinery and equipment
  • Skived 3M™ PTFE Film Tapes are more conformable than typical extruded PTFE film tapes
  • Excellent chemical resistance enables tape to withstand challenging applications

An Exceptionally Slick Surface

The 3M PTFE Skived Film Tape 5480 features a skived film backing that offers excellent conformability when unwound from the roll, setting it apart from typical extruded PTFE film tapes. This tape was specifically developed by 3M to provide a quick and easy solution for reducing friction between moving surfaces. It serves as an anti-stick or easy-release medium, particularly in situations where pressure, temperature changes, and other factors may lead to adhesion. By applying the 3M PTFE Skived Film Tape 5480, surface movement can be improved, squeaks and rattles can be eliminated, and machine noise can be reduced. Additionally, PTFE is highly resistant to chemicals, making it suitable for use as a temporary chemical barrier. With a wide temperature use range of -65F/-54C to 500F/260C, this tape is versatile and can be utilized in various applications.

Recommended Applications
  • Roll-wrap for web processing, belts, and plates where sticky materials and inks may occur
  • High temperature wire bundling and harnessing
  • Squeak and noise reduction
  • Shielding and protecting against chemicals
  • Mold release for composite bonding

What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material widely used across different industries and applications to reduce the coefficient of friction. Its non-stick properties and high heat resistance make it an ideal choice for non-stick coatings in frying pans and other cookware. PTFE is also an excellent insulating material for electrical applications due to its non-conductivity. Moreover, PTFE exhibits non-reactivity to numerous chemicals, making it suitable for containers and pipework handling reactive and corrosive substances. By reducing friction, PTFE enhances the wear resistance and energy efficiency of machinery. It is particularly beneficial in industrial applications that require sliding action of parts, such as bearings, gears, and slide plates, where it outperforms materials like nylon or acetal. 3M has utilized an extrusion process to transform this versatile compound into a thin film, which is then combined with 3M's unique pressure-sensitive adhesives to create these PTFE tapes. The result is a range of innovative and high-performance 3M PTFE tapes that are reliable, durable, and effective in reducing friction.
