3M Fire Barrier Electrical Box Inserts are a flexible, one-piece fire-rated intumescent insert used to protect electrical boxes by adhering to the inside the box. When exposed to fire, the insert expands to fill up the box preventing the spread of fire and limiting temperature rise.

  • Protection of membrane penetrations for listed metallic boxes
  • Tested in accordance with ASTM E814 (UL 1479) (Certified as a Wall Opening Protective Material, UL Category CLIV).
  • STC rating of 62 when tested in a STC 62 rated wall assembly

How It Works

The insert operates through a thermally-activated expansion mechanism that engages when exposed to elevated temperatures during a fire event. As heat is applied, the material undergoes a controlled expansion process that effectively seals the internal airspace within the electrical box, eliminating gaps that could allow flames, smoke, or hot gases to pass through. Additionally, the insert develops a protective char layer on its surface, which serves as a thermal barrier that actively resists further fire advancement and helps maintain the structural integrity of the wall system during critical early stages of a fire incident.
