3M has developed and integrated an innovative bonding technology into the 3M™ Trizact™ Diamond Polishing Wheel 685DC. This advanced "Trizact bond" formulation delivers exceptional surface finishing results while preventing distortion of tool profiles and cutting edges, ensuring a consistently polished appearance throughout the polishing process. Engineered with primary applications in polishing the flute geometries of drill bits and end mills, this wheel represents a sophisticated fusion of resin-bonded diamond technology and non-woven abrasive wheel characteristics. By merging these two distinct abrasive methodologies, the wheel achieves efficient material removal while retaining sufficient structural integrity to undergo truing and dressing operations and to faithfully track intricate tool geometries.

The 685DC wheel features diamond particles that are uniformly distributed throughout its entire structure. As the wheel undergoes normal wear during operation, new sharp diamond particles are progressively revealed at the working surface, maintaining optimal cutting performance throughout the tool's service life. This continuous exposure of fresh abrasive material results in dependable and predictable polishing performance, which translates into enhanced manufacturing productivity, reduced scrap rates and rework requirements, and improved overall part quality.

Although the wheel can be operated on handheld grinding equipment, the 685DC was specifically engineered for integration with CNC grinding machines and automated manufacturing systems, where it operates seamlessly within existing production workflows.

Polishing cylindrical cutting tools to a mirror-like finish can substantially extend tool longevity and enhance part quality.
