3M PTFE Film Tape 5498 uses an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive rubber adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in mold release applications where a non-silicone tape is required.

  • Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
  • Rubber adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces where silicone is not permitted
  • Resists high temperatures in manufacturing operations
  • Extruded 3M™ PTFE Film Tape lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes
  • High strength and abrasion resistance ensures reliability and performance to reduce friction, rattle and machinery noise

PRODUCT FAQ

  1. What is 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5498 used for?

The 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5498 Beige is most commonly used in heat sealing, packaging and electrical applications due to its superior release properties and excellent resistance to wear.

  2. What are the dimensions of the tape roll?

The Beige-colored film tape roll measures at 2 inches by 36 yards with a thickness or backing of approximately .0042 inches (4.2 mil). It contains a total of twenty four rolls per case.

  3. Is it easy to apply and remove this particular tape effectively without leaving any residue behind on my product after removal?

Yes, that's correct! This premium-grade film tape has an extremely low surface energy which makes it especially suitable for clean removability from various surfaces while reducing material buildup since they peel away easily.

Reduce Friction Between Moving Surfaces

3M developed this tape as a quick and easy release medium between surfaces where pressure, temperature changes and other factors may create a measure of adhesion, particularly in composite bonding applications. Applying 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5498 can help reduce stick of composite resins to mold surfaces, even under a wide range of temperatures (from 40°F/4°C to 350°F/177°C) and pressures. The rubber adhesive is a non-silicone formulation designed to remove cleanly from surfaces where silicone is not permitted.

Recommended Application
  • Mold release tape for composite bonding
  • Masking of critical parts where silicone contamination is a concern
What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material used in a variety of industries and applications to reduce the coefficient of friction. Because of its non-stick properties and high heat resistance, PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for frying pans and other cookware. It makes an excellent insulating material for electrical applications because of its non-conductivity. PTFE is non-reactive to numerous chemicals, due to the chemical resistance of fluoropolymer bonds; making it effective in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE reduces friction, wear and energy efficiency of machinery. Because of its low friction, PTFE is used in industrial applications where sliding action of parts is required, such as with bearings, gears, slide plates, etc. In these applications, it delivers significantly better performance than nylon or acetal. 3M has taken this versatile compound through an extrusion process to create a thin film, then paired the film with 3M's unique pressure sensitive adhesives to make these PTFE tapes. Innovative, high performance 3M PTFE tapes are reliable, durable and reduce friction.
