3M PTFE Film Tape 5498 uses an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive rubber adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in mold release applications where a non-silicone tape is required.

  • Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
  • Rubber adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces where silicone is not permitted
  • Resists high temperatures in manufacturing operations
  • Extruded 3M™ PTFE Film Tape lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes
  • High strength and abrasion resistance ensures reliability and performance to reduce friction, rattle and machinery noise

PRODUCT FAQ

  1. What is PTFE film tape used for?

3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5498 has high temperature, silicone adhesive that provides a long-lasting hold. It offers excellent release properties while maintaining its chemical and electrical resistance.

  2. How wide and how long are the rolls of this tape?

The beige-colored 3M™ PTFE Film Tape 5498 is available in rolls that are14 inches wide by 36 yards long (4.2 mil thickness). Each case contains only one roll of the mentioned measurement.

  3. Can you use it on a wide range of surfaces?

Yes! This Beige-colored versatile tape can be used on a variety of substrates including heat sealing bars, blister forming and form-fill-seal equipment, plus many other demanding applications where high speed flying splices are needed removing cleanly without residue or breakage after aging in up to 400°F (204°C) oven temperatures for over an hour.

Reduce Friction Between Moving Surfaces

3M developed the PTFE Film Tape 5498 as a quick and easy release medium between surfaces where pressure, temperature changes, and other factors may create a measure of adhesion, particularly in composite bonding applications. Applying this tape can help reduce stick of composite resins to mold surfaces, even under a wide range of temperatures (from 40°F/4°C to 350°F/177°C) and pressures. The rubber adhesive is a non-silicone formulation designed to remove cleanly from surfaces where silicone is not permitted.

Recommended Application
  • Mold release tape for composite bonding
  • Masking of critical parts where silicone contamination is a concern
What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material used in a variety of industries and applications to reduce the coefficient of friction. PTFE is non-reactive to numerous chemicals, due to the chemical resistance of fluoropolymer bonds; making it effective in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE reduces friction, wear, and energy efficiency of machinery. Because of its low friction, PTFE is used in industrial applications where sliding action of parts is required, such as with bearings, gears, slide plates, etc. In these applications, it delivers significantly better performance than nylon or acetal. 3M has taken this versatile compound through an extrusion process to create a thin film, then paired the film with 3M's unique pressure-sensitive adhesives to make these PTFE tapes. Innovative, high-performance 3M PTFE tapes are reliable, durable, and reduce friction.
