3M PTFE Film Tape 5498 uses an extruded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing. This tape offers an extremely low coefficient of friction which, in combination with a pressure sensitive rubber adhesive, creates a smooth, non-stick surface over a variety of substrates to assist in mold release applications where a non-silicone tape is required.

  • Non-stick PTFE film provides an exceptionally slick surface for easy clean-up
  • Rubber adhesive provides clean removal from a variety of surfaces where silicone is not permitted
  • Resists high temperatures in manufacturing operations
  • Extruded 3M™ PTFE Film Tape lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes
  • High strength and abrasion resistance ensures reliability and performance to reduce friction, rattle and machinery noise

Reduce Friction Between Moving Surfaces

3M has developed a special tape, known as 3M PTFE Film Tape 5498, that serves as a release medium between surfaces. This tape is particularly useful in composite bonding applications where pressure, temperature changes, and other factors may cause adhesion. By applying this tape, you can effectively reduce the stickiness of composite resins to mold surfaces, even in extreme temperature ranges from 40F/4C to 350F/177C and under varying pressures. The rubber adhesive used in this tape is a non-silicone formulation, ensuring clean removal from surfaces where silicone is not permitted.

Recommended Application
  • Mold release tape for composite bonding
  • Masking of critical parts where silicone contamination is a concern

What is PTFE?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material widely used in various industries and applications to reduce friction. Its non-stick properties and high heat resistance make it an ideal choice for non-stick coatings in cookware, such as frying pans. PTFE is also commonly used as an insulating material in electrical applications due to its non-conductivity. Its chemical resistance, thanks to the fluoropolymer bonds, makes it suitable for containers and pipework handling reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE is known for its ability to reduce friction, wear, and improve energy efficiency in machinery. It outperforms materials like nylon or acetal in industrial applications that require sliding action, such as bearings, gears, and slide plates. 3M has utilized this versatile compound by extruding it into a thin film and combining it with their unique pressure-sensitive adhesives to create these PTFE tapes. The result is an innovative and high-performance product that is reliable, durable, and effectively reduces friction.
